Community Language Learning Resources

For those who are interested in learning languages, but are not currently enrolled in UNM, there are many options.

University of New Mexico (UNM) - various languages

Members of the community can enroll in the university as non-degree seeking students and take courses in any of the 17 languages offered at UNM. See here for requirements and how to apply.

Senior citizens (aged 65+) may be able to take classes for $5/credit hour, up to 10 credit hours per semester. See here for details or call (505)277-5363.

UNM Continuing Education offers both in-person and online language classes in Arabic, English (ESL), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. 

The Albuquerque Public Library has many free resources for language learning, including access to Pronunciator (requires a library card number).

Online - various languages

There are too many online resources to list here. We encourage you to find YouTube channels, podcasts, websites, and/or apps that you enjoy and are at your proficiency level. Several sites - TalkAbroad, iTalki, My Language Exchange , Hello Talk, Tandem - offer conversation partners in your target language.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The Center for English Language & American Culture (CELAC), a unit of the UNM Global Education Office, offers intensive English classes for personal, academic, and professional success. CELAC's community English classes are offered each semester for $195 for a 6-week course. 

Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) offers ESL classes for New Mexico residents 16 years of age and older. See here for more information and how to apply.

ReadWest can provide tutors to help individuals improve their reading or speaking abilities in English. They also offer Basic Literacy, Computer Literacy, and High School Equivalency preparation classes. Encuentrooffers ESL classes, as well as Computer, Citizenship, Finance, Small Business, and Home Health Care Assistant classes. Catholic Charities offers some ESL classes. The City of Albuquerque holds weekly classes at the Westgate Community Center.

French

L'alliance française of Albuquerque offers French classes for adults and children and organizes cultural events throughout the year. Intermediate to advanced French students can join Le Groupe Français d'Albuquerque or attend a Meetup event with the Albuquerque French Meetup group.

Korean

UNM does not currently offer Korean classes, but the Korean-American Association of New Mexico offers classes for children and adults.

Spanish

The Instituto Cervantes of Albuquerque (and worldwide) offers Spanish classes for adults and children and organizes cultural events throughout the year.
