The LLC, in conjunction with the Department of Languages, Cultures, & Literatures and with support from the Ortiz Center, hosted Dr. Keith Brown for a talk about public scholarhip. Dr. Brown is the Director of the Melikian Center: Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies, and Professor in the School of Politics and Global Studies at Arizona State University. ASL Game Night

The Art of Useless: Ma Ke's Fashion, Jia Zhangke's Documentary, and Chinese Consumer Culture, Dr. Calvin Hui, William & Mary

Exploring the Professional Value of Language Study Beyond Academia, Natalie Spencer, Program Officer, U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs

Branding the City: Instrumentalizing Difference in Lisbon's Mouraria - Dr. Catalina Iannone, The Ohio State University

This talk explores the discursive patterns driving the branding of Iberian cities in the era of the 2008 global financial collapse, with special attention to their expression in historically disenfranchised districts of the region’s capital cities. A video of the presentation is here.

Learnifying Gaming through Language Learning Video Games

Isabel Last, Creator of Faena, a Spanish language learning video game

Since the 1500's, second language learning has been steeped in grammar, memorization, and translation. As the need to speak multiple languages arises alongside globalization, Isabel Last has begun her work on a language learning solution that would focus on learning to conversationally speak as well as provide all motivation for learning a language within a single product. The result is Faena, a language learning video game in development that uses voice-recognition and narrative based gameplay in a game world that can better accurately represent the wildly complex and diverse aspects of teaching languages and cultures. Revitalizing Indigenous Languages - Antonia Carcelén-Estrada

On Wednesday, September 27th, Antonia Carcelén-Estrada gave a presentation on one area of her expertise, the revitalization of indigenous languages. A video of the talk is here.

LLC Latin American Cultural Event

September 21st, 2023, 12:00-1:00pm

On Thursday, September 21st, local Latin band Baracutanga played in front of the SUB (east side) from 12:00-1:00pm. They put on a great show so be on the lookout for other local gigs!
