Services & Resources for Students
Virtual dinner in Comparative Lit class
The Language Learning Center provides many services and resources for students of Foreign Languages & Literatures, Spanish & Portuguese, Signed Language Interpreting Program and CELAC. We also provide CAPS drop-in tutoring and conversation groups to all UNM students.
Computer Lab Use
Language students are welcome to the LLC computer labs during lab hours. Lab 3 is our Open Lab. If you need a very quiet place to work, talk to the lab attendants about using another lab or the Movie Room. We are entirely a Mac lab.
- Lab 1, Social Learning Lab is used for collaborative work, such as group study and conversation groups. There are a few desktop computers in this lab. Students may check out laptops for use during class as well. You will need your Lobocard to check out laptops.
- Lab 2 has 30 desktop computers and one instructor station
- Lab 3 is always an open lab. Classes are not scheduled in this lab. There are 30 desktop computers. Often there will be tutoring going on in this lab, and quiet talking is allowed.
- Lab 4 has 30 desktop computers and one instructor station
- Lab 5 is for use for Sign students only. Sign students: Please ask the attendants for access to this lab.
- Lab 6 has 30 desktop computers and one instructor station
- Movie Room - Large screen TV, DVD player for movie viewing and XBox for foreign language video gaming. Seats up to about eleven people. There are two computer workstations. Make reservations to ensure availability. When not reserved, this room is used for quiet study.
Tutoring
The LLC has CAPS drop-in tutoring. Check in at CAPS tutoring table. Tutoring for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek/Latin, Japanese, Portuguese and Russian occurs in Lab 3 at the Tutor Table. See tutoring schedule for times.
Video Games
Use video games as a way to practice your target language in a fun and challenging way. Reservations advised. We have an XBox with two controllers. Currently our titles include:
- Portal 2 - Text, audio and subtitles: Spanish, French, German, and Russian, English (ESL only). Subtitles and text only, no audio: Polish, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Korean, and Italian
- Mass Effect - Spanish, English (ESL only)
Games
We have board games for you to play! Right now our selection is limited, but we plan to get more games. Let us know what you like. Currently we have:
- Scrabble (English and Spanish)
- Monopoly (Spanish)
- Lince (Portuguese)
- Imagem & Açao (Portuguese)
- Bingo (not language specific)
- Navajo Bingo
- Pictionary (English for ESL)
- Apples to Apples (English for ESL)
Printing
You will need your Lobo ID or your printing card to print from one of the lab computers.
- Select Print from the File menu. Select the “LLC Laser Printing” listed under “Printer.”
- Select “Duplex Double-Sided Printing” listed under “Presets.”
- Select “Print” at the bottom of the print window.
- Another window will open requesting your name, the document name, and an optional password. This information will help you find your print job on the printing computer, located in the Hub.
- In the center of the lab, the Hub, there are two black printers and two black computers. Please slide your card at one of the black computers, select your print job, collect your papers, and then log off.
- If you need further help, please ask for assistance at the front desk.
LLC Rules!
- Only students studying language or Sign may use the LLC labs. If you are not a language or Sign student, please use another computer lab on campus. (Exception: All UNM students, faculty, staff and alumni are welcome to participate in conversation groups.)
- Check in at the front desk each day that you are in the labs. This includes whether you are in a class, using the open lab, participating in conversation groups, or getting tutoring. If you leave the lab and come back later, please let the attendant know that you have already checked in.
- You must leave an ID (valid lobocard, driver's license or passport) when checking out laptops, movies, video games, audiovisual equipment, cables, or headphones.
- Food and drink is only allowed in the Hub area and in Lab 1 (if no LLC laptops are being used). No food or drink is allowed in any other lab. Please leave your beverages or food in the designated area in the Hub.
- Feel free to talk in the Hub area and in the labs. Language practice is encouraged.
- Be courteous and considerate towards others, including lab attendants.
