The UNM Language Learning Center was formerly known as the Language Laboratory and was established in its current location in Ortega Hall in 1974. It was considered a state-of-the-art technological facility.
Over time the technology changed from audio tapes to computers. The pedagogical changes were equally dramatic and are reflected in changes to the physical space - from individual audio carrels to collaborative spaces. Renovations to the LLC began in 2012 and have resulted in an inspiring example of 21st-century collaborative language center design.
