The UNM Language Learning Center - formerly known as the Language Laboratory - was established in its current location in Ortega Hall in 1974. Directed by Dr. Neddy Vigil, who retired in 2010, it was considered a state-of-the-art facility.
Over time the technology changed from audio tapes to computers. The pedagogical changes are reflected in changes to the physical space - from individual audio carrels to collaborative classrooms. Renovations to the LLC beginning in 2012 have resulted in an inspiring example of 21st-century collaborative language center design.
